How Can We Develop Kingdom Character?

When Jesus entered the world, He proclaimed the kingdom of heaven (Matt. 4:17). He revealed that the kingdom was not only a future hope but also a present reality, declaring that it was already among the people (Lk. 17:21). The kingdom is made up of those who confess Christ as Lord—though not everyone who professes faith is genuinely saved (cf. Matt. 7:21-23, 13:36-43). In the Beatitudes (Matt. 5:3-10), Jesus describes the defining traits of true kingdom citizens: they are humble in spirit, grieve over sin, walk in gentleness, and deeply desire righteousness. They show mercy, pursue purity, promote peace, and endure persecution for the sake of righteousness. Each Beatitude begins with “Blessed” and concludes with a divine promise, earning them their beloved name. If these qualities are absent—or at least not developing—in our lives, we should question whether we truly belong to Christ’s kingdom.

Yet the Beatitudes are not just a description of kingdom citizens; they are also their aspirations. While only Christ perfectly embodied these traits, every believer should strive to grow in them. Reflecting on the Beatitudes serves two vital purposes: it confirms whether we have genuinely entered God’s kingdom and challenges us to mature in these Christlike virtues. Let’s explore them together with The Bible Teacher’s Guide.
